Soak Up History in Long Branch, NJ

The history of Long Branch as a popular seaside resort is long and vibrant. The area first became known as a seaside resort during the late 1700s. Unlike many resort towns which eventually subsided in popularity, Long Branch continued to grow more vibrant and eventually became known as the Hollywood of the East, due to the number of well known celebrities who came to Long Branch to enjoy the shore and often performed there. The town was so popular as a resort area, that numerous presidents have spent time there over the course of history.

Today you can find out more about the history of Long Branch through the many historical sights in the area. One of those is the site of the church where some seven presidents have attended church during their time in Long Branch; more than any other church outside of Washington, D.C.

You will also find that there are many other historical sights located throughout the city associated with many of the presidents who visited the town. This includes President Garfield, who actually died in 1881 in Long Branch, following a gunshot wound he received in the summer of that same year.

Current Events in Long Branch, NJ

One of the most popular events on the Jersey Shore is rapidly approaching, the New Jersey marathon. The event will take place Thursday, April 29th through Sunday, May 2nd. While the event is primarily a marathon, visitors and residents alike will find there are plenty of activities to enjoy. Athletes of all types of abilities, including those using walkers and wheelchairs are welcome to join in on the fun. The first wave of racers, wheelchair athletes, will take to the course at 8:45. The second wave will begin at 9 am and will include those athletes who anticipate being able to complete the course between five and nine minutes per mile. All remaining athletes will take to the course after the second wave has cleared the starting area.

The New Jersey Marathon Festival will also include a variety of different family fun events throughout the entire weekend that will appeal to all ages. Just some of the activities that will be available include face painting, clowns, carnival games, music, refreshments, crafts, awards and much more. There will also be many other forms of entertainment held throughout the weekend of the marathon festival.
